The faceted granulation and red staining suggest that this hairpin came from the northeast Malay Peninsula, which was noted for such craftsmanship. The gold granules were filed in order to produce the plane surfaces and yellow gold was tinted red. Jewellery belonging to this region is refined, generally smaller in size and tends to be elaborate in its details.
