This brush is made of horse tail hair and was used by the Turkish marbler to throw dyes onto the water to form patterns. Calligraphers and scribes strived to use the best available materials and tools to produce their work. One of the oldest 'ebru' (marbled) paper goes back to the 16th century. Marbled papers were used to frame Islamic calligraphic pieces and to line the interior of leather book bindings.
