This ‘sancai’ (three-colour) jarlet with a short neck, globular body and a footrim has a dragon and floral motifs moulded in relief around its body. The body is covered with a green and yellow glaze, while the dragons are highlighted with a yellowish-brown glaze. These glazes are applied over a thin layer of white slip (liquid clay), which is visible just above the foot. This jarlet was acquired in the Philippines and could be used for burials. The practice of using lead-glazed burial wares had already started during the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE). The glaze tradition continued into the Ming period.
