This 'pending' (belt buckle) features the eight Daoist immortals as well as other auspicious motifs such as turtles and phoenixes. Various metalwork techniques such as repoussé—in which designs are hammered into sheet metal—engraving and chasing were used to fashion the piece. Peranakan Chinese pending comes in a variety of shapes and styles. For instance, unlike this ogival or eye-shaped pending, Aceh-style pending tended to be quatrefoil.
