Born of mixed ethnicity of Hmong and Thai, Poong embraces a philosophy that views every being as having a dichotomous existence. As exemplified in this untitled suite of six paintings, the human being is both animal and vegetal in nature, where both plant and individual intertwine harmoniously to become one entity in each of the manifestations. Poong uses foliage native to the hill regions of northern Vietnam where she grew up, as well as the banana plant, alluded to in these works by the oversized green leaves, to reference her national identity. Trained as a sculptor, Poong presently finds the two-dimensional genre suited to her current concerns.
