Born in 1962 in Singapore, multi-disciplinary artist Goh Ee Choo is a graduate of Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and London’s Slade School of Fine Arts. Goh won First Prize (Representational Painting category) in the 1985 UOB Painting of the Year Competition, and came to prominence in 1988 with the seminal collaborative exhibition ‘Trimurti’.This little colour pencil drawing, from 1984, was completed by Goh while he was a student at the Academy. It presumably shows a Madonna posed with crossed arms, head tilted back and mouth open. She appears swaddled or bound in cloth, perhaps explaining what could be her crying out expression. In the same year, Goh received the Tan Tze Chor Young Artist Award from the Singapore Art Society. Recognition of his talent came early in his career in the form of awards and scholarships, allowing Goh to study and exhibit his work overseas.
