Born in 1962 in Singapore, multi-disciplinary artist Goh Ee Choo is a graduate of Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and London’s Slade School of Fine Arts. Goh won First Prize (Representational Painting category) in the 1985 UOB Painting of the Year Competition, and came to prominence in 1988 with the seminal collaborative exhibition ‘Trimurti’.The concept for this work, which is one of four sketches originally exhibited in ‘Trimurti’, is derived from diverse sources like the work of colour fields of Russian/American abstract artist Mark Rothko, Ibrahim Hussein’s line work and 6th century Chinese philosophy. The objective was to transform the canvas into a microcosm of the universe, as expressed in Taoist teachings. The central white square becomes a mirror of the great ever-changing void of Tao. It is a manifestation of nature because of the transient quality evoked.
