Recognized as one of the pioneer sculptors in Vietnam, Nguyen Hai is a representational sculptor from the 1970s. His works, although often robust, have a sense of elegance that leaves the viewer in awe of his artistic ability. Generally using legends, myths and heroes as his subjects, Hai connects with his viewers by promoting nationalism and patriotism. Hai depicts the legendary national hero, Thanh Giong on his way to fight the Chinese invaders. While the body of Thanh Giong is turned, the body of the horse is kept straight and cylindrical, as an indication of what it was made of according to legend: iron. The semi-abstract forms give a contemporary look to the ancient tale.
