Tobacco boxes come in various sizes and shapes. The intricacy of basketweaving can be seen on this purse-shaped box. Made in the form a tobacco pouch of palm-leaf plaiting, the rich texture of natural plant fibre was achieved by incising and hammering the surface. Smoking tobacco, like chewing betelnut, has long been integrated into traditional social ritual customs of Southeast Asia. It was offered as a token of hospitality to friends and guests. On ceremonial occasions, tobacco was indispensable the vessels to hold tobacco leaves provided an opportunity to display one's wealth and status.
