This letter was written from Singapore by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles to his friend Nathaniel Wallich, the superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic Gardens. After requesting for new stock of ether, Raffles mentions an enclosed article by an unknown author, which he states "might serve to explain the State of affairs here before my arrival and the necessity of my interference". This article, which he intends to be read by Holt Mackenzie, Secretary of the Bengal Government, is likely to be a negative report on the activities of William Farquhar, the first Resident of Singapore.
