This dresser is decorated with openwork spandrels, turned balustrades, and foliate carvings in low relief. It was once owned by the businessman and philanthropist Lee Cheng Yan (1841–1911), and housed at this home, Magenta Cottage, at 153 Killiney Road.Lee co-founded the Straits Steamship Company with Tan Jiak Kim (1859–1917) and Tan Keong Saik (1850–1909). It was the first joint Singapore-European shipping enterprise. He also founded the Hong Joo Chinese Free School and made generous donations to the Gan Eng Seng and Tao Nan schools to support Chinese-language education in Singapore.
