This look is part of Ans.Ein’s collection for Singapore Stories 2023. It is a response to the competition’s call to celebrate the kebaya, which coincided with efforts to nominate the kebaya to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The piece is crafted with squares of scrap polyester fabric and batik textiles, which were individually cut, folded, interlocked, and adhered. The design draws from multiple influences: the collar of a kebaya, the sleeves of a kimono, and the “New Look” silhouette popularised by Christian Dior in 1947. Ans.Ein is a Singapore-based fashion brand founded in 2017 by Anseina Eliza and Erlyn. The label creates designs inspired by various forms of art, such as painting and architecture.
