Fatimah Chik is a batik artist born in Johor, Malaysia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Design in Textile from MARA Institute of Technology (now UiTM), as one of the pioneering batch of students in the newly founded School of Art and Design. Nusantara Series is a collection of batik scrolls made in the 1980s, stemming from Fatimah's interest and research in textile traditions and motifs from the Southeast Asian region while she was in Hawaii between 1975-77. The composition of her batik scrolls is often structured around repetitive geometric shapes or intricately decorated patterns, pointing towards an influence of Islamic aesthetics while simultaneously expressing a regional abstraction form and heritage.
