Ya Kun cup and saucer

This cup and saucer set is used to serve hot beverages such as coffee and tea in Ya Kun outlets in Singapore. With a history dating back to 1936, Ya Kun’s story can be traced back to its Hainanese roots. Having arrived in Singapore from Hainan as a 15-year-old in 1926, Loi Ah Koon found a job as an assistant at a coffeestall within the Hainanese community, before setting up his own coffeestall with two fellow Chinese immigrants 10 years later. After both partners left, Loi continued the business on his own and formerly registered the shop in 1944, selling coffee, tea, eggs and toast. He moved his coffeestall to Lau Pa Sat in 1972 and named it Ya Kun Coffeestall. While Ya Kun today is known for its coffee and signature toast, it also offers both traditional and local favourites such as French toast, mee siam and laksa, which are equally popular among its customers.
