The guqin, also known as the Chinese zither, is a musical instrument that has been played in China for over three thousand years. In traditional Chinese culture, playing the guqin was considered a form of self-cultivation, and its music was believed to promote inner peace and harmony. The making of a guqin is a complex and intricate process. The process begins with selecting the wood, usually paulownia wood or zitan, for the various parts of the instrument. After each part is crafted and assembled, the instrument will be coated by layers of lacquer, which both protect the wood and add to its tonal quality. 13 pieces of ivory, jade, or mother-of-pearl that indicate pitch positions will also be added. The strings, usually made of silk or nylon, are then attached to the instrument.
