Bourne & Shepherd was a photographic studio in India primarily associated with British photographers Charles Shepherd and Samuel Bourne, and was one of the longest-running photographic businesses in the world. Established in Shimla in 1863, new branches were subsequently established in Calcutta in 1866 and Bombay in 1876. Known for their production of photographs depicting India’s scenic landscapes and topography, the studio’s work was widely distributed in India and Britain, being so renowned that their services were used by India’s royalty and the British colonial administration. Bourne and Shepherd also expanded outside the region in the 1870s and established branch studios in Burma, capturing the architecture, topography and portraits of Burma’s local people and rulers.
