This long kebaya (or baju panjang to Peranakan Chinese of Singapore and Malacca) is customised from a batik fabric recommended by designer Ratianah Tahir for Peranakan doyenne and Singapore style icon Genevieve Peggy Jeffs. This silhouette is in line with the wearer’s style preference for kaftans and long flare jackets that are not too tight. Like baju panjang of the late 19th century, this version is also made of batik. But it is inspired by the style of kebaya worn by Peranakans in the mid 20th century to be colourful and feature large floral motifs. The batik is handdrawn with floral motifs of the chrysanthemum and peony, and two butterflies positioned at the back shoulders. The scalloped edges along the opening, sleeves and hem are embroidered with metal thread to match the gold and silver prada (applied foil) outlines of the motifs and to add drama. Overall, it expresses a Peranakan aesthetic from Genevieve Peggy JeffsRatianah Tahir is the founder and designer of Kebaya by Ratianah (est. 2005).
