These slippers typically complement the kebaya or baju kurung ensemble across the Malay-Indonesian world. The slipper faces are decorated in tekat timbul embroidery. Tekat timbul, or traditional Malay couched embroidery, is a form of embroidery in which gold threads are couched over a designed template made of cardboard (mempulur) to produce a raised relief effect. Initially introduced as a craft solely practiced within the royal courts, the art form eventually spread to the masses, though in reality its is less commonly practiced due to the high costs of raw materials such as gold threads.
