This model is made based on drawings by Bernardino Amico documenting sacred architecture in the Holy Land. Designed with detachable parts, this model was used as a devotional aid for the faithful, who could take apart the model to view the interior of the church and locate various sites related to the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Models as such were produced and sold as part of the Holy Land souvenir and devotional object trade, which emerged out of Bethlehem and extended to major ports in Europe, Asia, and the Americas by the end of the 19th century.
