Hor Kwok Kin’s photographs are typified by the use of geometric angles and tonal contrast in creating interesting focal points in his compositions. This work, "Plucking Chickens at Loong Yick Kee Restaurant" is one of his earliest photographs. The tonal contrast contributes to the dramatised staging of an otherwise banal scene taken at the restaurant he worked in when he first arrived in Singapore. Born in 1939 in Ipoh, Malaysia, Hor relocated to Singapore at the age of nineteen. Self-taught, he picked up photography soon after he purchased his first camera. He was active in various salons, locally and regionally, between 1960s and 1980s. His photographs from this period captured quotidian scenes of Singapore inflected by a working-class sensibility. Hor was awarded the Associate Membership of the Photographic Society of Singapore (APPS) and the Royal Photography Society (ARPS) in the mid-eighties. In 1992, Hor was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS).
