This long-sleeved tunic with side panels called "pesak" corresponds to the type of baju kurung known as baju kurung Riau Pahang - referring to the regions where this form is favoured. The tunic would have been paired with a hip cloth or sarong. It was worn by Syed Abubakar bin Husain Aljunied's grandmother, Sharifah Khadijah binte Abdulrahman Aljunied, on the occasion of her wedding. The Aljunieds are one of the prominent Hadhrami Arab Peranakan families in Singapore and the region. Hailing from Hadhramawt in Yemen, the Aljunieds had already established themselves as traders in Palembang before Syed Omar bin Ali Aljunied (1792-1852) went over to Singapore after the British had set up a trading post in 1819.
