This studio photograph in postcard format shows a seated Chinese Peranakan nyonya and man with two standing young women. The seated nyonya is wearing baju panjang with sarong, while the seated man wears a Western-style white suit. The two standing young women are dressed in cheongsam tops with matching trousers. The photograph bears the studio mark ‘Wah Fong’.This photograph is part of a series of 74 photographs documenting a Peranakan wedding held in Penang in 1951. Peranakans commissioned photographs to document their families and important life events such as marriages and deaths. They also commissioned photographs to record their involvement in business enterprises, and in social causes such as schools and academic societies, religious groups, and in community and cultural associations. With improvements in camera technology, it became possible to take photographs without the assistance of a studio in the first decades of the 20th century.
