Prior to the 19th century, leisure travel was a privilege of the upper classes. The development of railroads such as the Federated Malay States Railways (FMSR) played a huge role in promoting tourism. Travel posters such as this would typically emphasis the wild and sublime beauty of the landscape as well as to exoticise the “other” – often what was seen as native of the land. They presented travellers with the exciting possibility of encountering and experiencing new cultures – in this case, it was to meet with the Malay locals who were dressed in ethnic clothes.
