Chanab

This elaborately decorated offering box is called a chanab. When in use, the cover is removed and used as a base for the stand, as in this photo. Long bamboo sticks decorated with red berries and flowers made from strips of candied young papaya would be set upright on the tray at the top. In Indonesia, beaded decorations are also sometimes added. The chanab is then set on the altar table together with the rest of the offerings. The cover is adorned with a variety of openwork motifs – vases with flowers symbolise peace as well as offerings.
