In 'Refugees B,' newspaper articles with headlines and images of the refugees are overlaid seemingly randomly onto one another like a collage. This artwork focuses on the critical role of the mass media through his silkscreen of newspaper articles covering the Vietnamese refugee crisis. News headlines that grab attention like 新难民 (new refugees) and 难民问题 (the refugee question) work in tandem with images of refugee families and their difficult living conditions, anxieties of having to leave their families and friends behind, as well as the scale of the refugee crisis represented by the image of a crowd of refugee repeated thrice as a horizonal line across the silkscreen painting. Tearing the newspaper articles covering the refugee crisis running across both text and images at the top of the entire artwork and even beyond the canvas creates a moment of tension and rupture, a metaphorical allusion and performative gesture to the fractured emotions of the refugees as real people rather than distanced and abstracted images.
