This photograph is among the group of objects donated by Mr Wislon David. It shows him performing at the Paya Lebar airport showing off a signature move. He can also be seen dressed in the black denim jacket and jeans that is part of this collection. A local singer-performer who paid tribute to Elvis Presley, David has been likened to the Rock and Roll King. With long sideburns and crooning style, and dressed in tailored pantsuits, broad belts, and shoes, he performed to full houses in Singapore. Especially in the 1960s, he was the opening act for several international artists (Helen Shapiro, Freddie and the Dreamers, Honeycombs) and thus contributed to the local popular music scene. David who could impersonate Cliff Richard, Dean Martin and Perry Como stuck with Elvis because he was more macho and really moved when he sang. It was during a Helen Shapiro show at the Badminton Hall that David met Ginny Tiu sisters from San Francisco who appeared with Elvis in It Happened at the World’s Fair, Girls, Girls, Girls and the Roustabout.
