This table came from the Low family home, located along Emerald Hill Road. The house was built by their ancestor Low Koon Yee (1862-1926) in the 1920s. He was the largest developer on Emerald Hill. Upon his death, the house passed on to his son Low Peng Soy (died 1938), who owned Roxy Theatre on East Coast Road. Largely European in form, the table shows Chinese influence in the taotie mask carvings on its legs. The masks can be traced to Shang and Zhou period bronze vessels.Popular among Peranakans, so-called “brown and gold” furniture is characterised by the use of teak, combination of European and Chinese influences, and fine gilding.
