These skirt cloths (kain panjang) bear the Sidamukti pattern. Diagonal lattice grids enclose auspicious motifs, such as the single wing (lar) of the majestic Garuda bird, butterflies and house structures. All symbols of good fortune and prosperity for the bride and groom. The dominant hues of brown and indigo are typical of Surakarta-style batik. These matching skirt cloths were worn by Toetti Toekajati (b. 1935) and Soerjanto Ismangoen (b. 1935) for their wedding in Yogyakarta on 29 August 1959. In Java and many parts of the Malay Archipelago, the wedding couple is regaled as “King and Queen” for the day. As an extension of this special status, they wear batik associated with royalty. This Sidamukti pattern originates from the Surakarta palace.
