This is one of the most unusual tombstones found in Bukit Brown Cemetery. Among the over 3700 exhumed graves, it is the only one which was decorated with a pair of ceramic dishes. The dishes, which have been inset into the tomb shoulders, feature transfer-printed floral decoration and were probably imported from the UK. They may have been treasured possessions of the deceased and thus specially incorporated into his tombstone. The tomb belongs to Mr Seah Geok Jin (谢玉籐) whose ancestral village is in Nan’an, Fujian province, China. The inscription on the tombstone states that it was erected on 24 December 1941 by his two sons and daughter. The burial registers of the cemetery indicate that he had passed away on 24 December 1941 at the age of 48.
