This sarong is signed “Oey Hian Swie”, which was a notable batik workshop in the Kedungwuni district of Pekalongan. Located along the north coast of Java, Pekalongan was a major batik-producing centre from as early as the first decades of the 20th century.Egrets are depicted in a watery environment marked by aquatic plants and gentle ripples, with butterflies and phoenixes flying overhead. Believed by the Javanese to offer protection against misfortune, egrets resemble cranes, which are symbols of longevity for many Chinese Peranakans. This was a popular north-coast batik motif and was widely reproduced.
