This textile, otherwise known as a tirai, would have been used as a central panel or wall hanging within the dais (pelamin) of Malay weddings - specifically within communities in Aceh, Sumatra and parts of the Malay peninsula including Perak and Kedah, where such decorative and embroidery traditions are more common. It features three 'tree of life' motifs, otherwise known as the pohon budi (or pohon beringin), which is a ubiquitous motif used on various ceremonial hangings. It also features two dragon-serpents (or naga) flank the central tree of life which may be seen as symbols of fertility. Lastly, the tree of life and naga motifs are bordered by a vinework of betel leaves (daun sirih), which are strongly associated with wedding rites.
