The covers of this set of Boy Scouts Manuals state that they were “in accordance with China Boy Scouts training” and they were most likely used by Boy Scouts members in Chinese-medium schools in Singapore.Following the birth of the Republic of China, the first Scout troop was organized by Reverend Yen Chia-lin in Wuchang in 1912 and the Scouting movement spread rapidly across the country. For Singapore, the scouting movement started earlier in 1910 when Frank Cooper Sands, a British scoutmaster started Boy Scouts under the sponsorship of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), which also served as its first headquarters. For the next forty years, the scouting movement also spread from Singapore to Malaya. The first Chinese-speaking Scout Troop was formed at the Chinese High School in 1947.
