The back of this greeting card depicts the Chinese ancient myth of the goddess Ma Gu offering longevity peaches while the front of the card features the words “Bo Ai” which was the foundation for Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s idea of Chinese democracy.Cards bearing scripted messages were distributed before Chinese New Year as a way of wishing friends and family better fortunes in the year to follow. By 1960s, the publishers in Singapore and Malaysia began to print the cards in both languages to cater to both the Chinese and English-educated Chinese community in Singapore.
