Gin labels such as this would have hung round the neck of a decanter to identify the alcohol inside. Based on the backstamp it was made by Crown Staffordshire Porcelain Co. Ltd in the 1930s-1950s. The Crown Staffordshire Porcelain Co. Ltd was etablished in 1801, but only in 1897 did the name Crown Staffordshire appear in the title of the firm. The company produced a wide variety of china objects including tableware, ornaments, and jewellery. This label hung around a decanter that was placed in a tantalus. A tantalus would hold decanters of alcohol and could be locked such that the decanters were still on display but could not be accessed. These were rumoured to have been intended to prevent servants, guests, or children from stealing alcohol, although the likelier explanation is that it was popular for its novelty value.
