This calligraphy was written in running script by the renowned calligrapher Qi Gong and dedicated to the late Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew in the summer of 1997. It records the calligrapher’s poetic impressions of Singapore on his first visit to the Lion City – the last line reads “high-rise buildings dense across the land.” Qi’s visit in 1997 was most likely for the purpose of co-organising a calligraphy exhibition with the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore. Born into a Manchu family in Beijing in 1912, Aisin-Gioro Qi Gong taught classical Chinese language and literature at Beijing Normal University from 1952 until his death at the age of 93 in 2005.
