This ink painting depicts a bird in flight amidst large lotus leaves painted in greyish-blue wash, with the pink petals of a flower peeking out from one. The withered stems seem barely able to support the weight of the leaves. A dedication in the lower right corner reads: “An aura of elegance. For Mr Lee Hsien Loong’s guidance and correction. Painted in Shanghai during Mid-Autumn Festival in 1987.” There are four artist’s seals.Born in 1937 in Hangzhou, Chen Jialing graduated from the Zhejiang Academy of Art in 1963, where he studied with the modern masters Pan Tianshou and Lu Yanshao. He first found acclaim for his impressionistic and abstract depictions of traditional bird-and-flower subjects from the late 1980s.
