This scroll is imprinted with 39 seals that were carved for Dr Tan Tsze Chor (1911-1983), a Singapore collector of Chinese art and pepper magnate, by the master artist Qi Baishi (1864-1957). Tan wrote the calligraphy. Qi carved a total of 48 seals with different sobriquets adopted by Tan, such as Master of the Xiang Xue Studio 香雪庄主and Braved the Seas by the Age of 20 二十经沧海.Tan gifted the scroll to first-generation Singapore artist Liu Kang (1911-2004), who was a very close friend and frequent guest at his home. Such gift-exchange practices are characteristic of the Chinese art circles of 20th century Singapore.
