This bowl with a rolled lip, is covered with a thick, lustrous glaze that falls short of the foot. The unglazed areas reveals the vessel’s pure white body. It has a ring-shaped foot that has been likened to a ritual jade disc or bi 璧. Such white bowls have been recovered from cosmpolitan Tang sites such as Chang’an (present day Xi’an) and Yangzhou, as well as in overseas locations like Samarra in Iraq and Fustat in Egypt. Likened to snow and silver, it is not difficult to see why the elegant and finely-potted Xing white wares enjoyed such great popularity.
