This is the first annual magazine produced by Sang Nila Utama School, which was the first Malay-medium school to be established by the government of Singapore after attaining self-governance in 1959. The establishment of Sang Nila Utama School was a historic and important gesture by the government at the time; it signalled the then-government's intent to both build upon colonial vernacular education policies which had achieved varying degrees of success throughout the nineteenth- and early-twentieth century. Secondly, it also underlined the government's commitment to Malay as the lingua franca and subsequently, the national language in Singapore. The magazine features essay contributions by students, photos of school activities as well as co-curricular committee write-ups, which provide a snapshot of the social and cultural zeitgeist in Malay society at the time.
