Embellished with intricate embroidery, this is an example of a type of kebaya known as kebaya sulam. Elaborate embroideries adorned the edges of the kebaya sulam, and sometimes completely cover the triangular front panels, which would drape over the lap when the wearer sat down.Sewing machines were available in the Malay Archipelago by the end of the 19th century, and by the first decades of the 20th century they were used to create increasingly complicated embroideries that imitated the appearance of lace.
