This lace shawl was made using a sewing machine. Sewing machines were available in the Malay Archipelago by the end of the 19th century, and by the first decades of the 20th century they were used to not only execute embroideries more quickly, but also to create complex embroideries that imitated the appearance of a wide variety of lace. Manuals in different languages, including Malay, were issued by sewing machine manufacturers like Singer to provide instruction on the creation of these embroideries. Christian missionaries to the region taught embroidery and lace-making to the young girls who attended their schools. This shawl belonged to Tan Touw Nio (1890–1976 ).
