Tamils have been in Singapore since the establishment of a British trading port by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. Early Tamils Singapore occupied diverse occupations such as merchants and private financiers, and labour who built much of Singapore’s public buildings and infrastructure. They also formed part of the militia, surveyors, police and other colonial personnel. However, little is documented about the life of early Tamil women, aspects of their identity including dress. The proposed acquisition is a traditional Indian sari worn by a Tamil bride for her engagement ceremony in the Straits Settlements.
