This letter was written by Edward Adolphus, the 11th Duke of Somerset, to William Evans, the East India Company’s Baggage Warehouse Keeper in June 1821, inquiring about some “articles of natural curiosity” sent by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles from Sumatra. Raffles was at that time Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen in Sumatra, and was actively involved in collecting natural history specimens and sending them back to London.
