This metal tobacco box carries the motif of a tiger, which is reminiscent of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment's insignia. The words 'To LES, from BOB, Malaya 13-6-1944' are inscribed on the lid around the tiger. This box could have been made by a POW from the regiment for a fellow soldier. Names were often inscribed onto personal objects to help with identification should the owner die.The 1st Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment fought in Malaysia and Singapore during WWII and its men were taken prisoner after the fall of Singapore. The regiment was granted 'Royal' status in 1946.
