This matchbox was adapted into a transmitting device that was able to send messages in Morse code. It was built by hand and used by Prisoners-of-War (POWs) to communicate messages over hearing distance. Invented by Samuel Morse in the 19th century, Morse code comprised a series of dots and dashes representative of each letter of the English alphabet, allowing messages to be communicated quickly and clearly.
