Lady Sophia Raffles was the wife of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, having married him in 1817. This letter is part of a collection of letters written by her to the Revd Thomas Raffles, who was her husband's cousin. It was the first letter written by her upon arrival at Bencoolen in which she shares her first impressions. She also responds to news of the death of her brother, and shares the news of the birth of her daughter Charlotte.
