Painted following her return to Singapore from Paris, Ship (1960) demonstrates Lai’s confidence in compositional experimentation. Here, a scene of two docked ships is condensed into a single perspectival plane. The forms of men working on the deck of the nearest ship are simplified into silhouettes within a striking band of green that delineates the mid-ground of the composition, and creates a visual contrast with the dark blue hull of the second ship.
