Quan Seng opened in Singapore by 1890, advertising its services as photographer, and also ship and portrait painter. The firm was possibly established by a member of the Cantonese Lee clan of photographers, who set up studios in Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, and Magelang in the late 19th and early 20th century.
