This box contains a variety of beads, some still in strings while others are wrapped in old newspapers with the respective colours scribbled on it. These belonged to Chong Kim Neo (1916-1972), who made beaded slippers and garments from her home as she did not own a shop. The box and its contents offers an insight into how she would have worked. Seed beads are hallmarks of Peranakan needlework and were traditionally referred to as manek potong (cut beads).
