Gift of the Lim Family in memory of Edna Chong Kim Neo

Decorated with a figure of a phoenix at the centre, these slipper faces would have been used as vamps for a pair of slippers for a Peranakan bride. Cotton thread is used to overstitch metallic thread in a technique known as tekad timbol, creating a grid-like effect. This was made by Chong Kim Neo (1916-1972), who made beaded slippers and garments from her home as she did not own a shop.
